A pen and ink sketch of an old thatched cottage in England.
I started by sketching out the main detail in ink and then used a light wash of water to 'bleed' the ink out to give the lighter grey shades. I then used a very soft graphite pencil to add the rougher texture of the grass and thatch to help give a little more depth. http://www.portraits-online.com/art-blog/sketch-of-an-old-cottage-in-pen-ink I painted this with a direct "face-on" angle which works well here I think because of the contrast with the garden plants. Each brick is individually painted and the windows and doors have lots of detail themselves. I often recommend taking photos from a slight angle to the front of the house to make a more interesting composition but I hope you agree that face-on perspective can make an interesting house portrait too!
